Colonel Donald W. Hurst III is currently the Project Manager, Department of Defense Biometrics, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology.  Prior to this role, he was the ASA (ALT) Director, Fires and Force Protection, Pentagon. He entered the Army in 1992 as a Distinguished Military Graduate through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of California, Davis and was commissioned Military Intelligence branch detailed to the Armor Corps.

He has held both command and staff positions during his 25 years in the Army.  As an Armor Officer in Germany and Bosnia (Operation Joint Endeavor) assigned to the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, 1st Armored Division, he served as a Cavalry Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader, and Troop Executive Officer. As a Military Intelligence Officer, he served as an S-2 for the 1-506th Infantry “Currahees” (Air Assault) at Camp Greaves, Korea. COL Hurst also served as an S-2 and HHC Company Commander in 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Lewis, Washington.

COL Hurst’s acquisition experience includes a tour as the Contingency Contracting Officer for the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington; a Training with Industry assignment at Raytheon Missile Systems, Tucson, Arizona; Contracting Division Chief, Tank and Automotive Command (TACOM) Small Arms and Aircraft Armament Division, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois; J-3 Operations and Iraqi Ministry of Interior Procurement Advisor, Joint Contingency Contracting Command – Iraq/Afghanistan (Operation Iraqi Freedom); Senior Battle Command Program Analyst, Deputy Chief of Staff G-8 Program Analysis and Evaluation Division, Pentagon; Commander Defense Contracting Management Agency Northern Iraq (Operation New Dawn); and Commander Defense Contract Management Agency Cleveland, Ohio.

His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, the Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course, the U.S. Army Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Army War College. He is Defense Acquisition University Level 3 certified in Program Management and Contracting, as well as a certified member of the U.S. Army Acquisition Corps.

COL Hurst’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal 1OLC, Meritorious Service Medal 3OLC, Army Commendation Medal 4OLC, and the Army Achievement Medal. He earned the Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Army Staff Badge, and Thai Parachutist Badge.
